SEMESTER TWO - 2022

 UNIT ONE

TASK

Using a conceptual approach, develop a self-portrait based on a three-dimensional form –

a box which measures 12cm x 12cm x 12cm.

You may explore the volume outside, or inside the box if it relates to your focus.

How you interpret, perceive or alter the form will be determined by the message you wish to convey about yourself through the work.

The work should be completed and presented so that it is seen as a record of your thoughts, beliefs, opinion and reactions – therefore personal in nature.

“Out of Tune”

Mixed Media, Acrylic Paint, Hard Cardboard, Paper, Air dying clay

12 x 12 x 12 cm

The work “Out of Tune” is a representation of the artists person and self, taking simple objects and applying a deeper meaning to it. The work is constructed using a cardboard template of a 12cm x 12cm x 12cm without a lid, creating 5 sides of an open box. Further, the interior of the box was painted to represent the insides of a room, with 4 white walls and the floor being painted to represent carpet. The exterior of the box was painted accordingly to the colours of the artists favourite musical albums, 1989, Speak Now and Reputation, each by Taylor Swift. The remaining 2 exterior sides were painted white to cover any remaining joining mistakes and then had sheet music from 2 songs named “Enchanted” and “Wonderland” from Speak Now and 1989 respectively. The interior of the box contains an origami bed, reflective of the fragile music industry that many artist lie upon. The air drying clay was used to create a table, holding a record player. The 10 album covers scattered around the roof reflect an insight into the artists favourite musical albums.

“th3 g055ips”

Mixed media, air dry clay, fabric, pearls, necklace, silk, paint (water colour), cardboard

12 x 12 x 12 cm

The piece “th3 g055ips” is what the artist has depicted themselves through their own point of view. By mixing many medias together, in different categories, they have captured the true elements of their art piece. With a deeper meaning of how someone can truly understand themselves and understand the fun thing in someone life. This work is created by a cardboard cut of a 12 cm x 12 cm lay out and stuck together to form a box. Then was covered my fabric that feels and look like someone skin. This shows how the artist was able to represent something so different but also achieving with water colour, making the cover of the box look like real skin. And, by adding mouths and ears by using air dry clay, the viewer can clearly tell that the box is representing a face. With the artist unique facial beauty marks, they have made the box into their face. Additionally, they have painted the inside of the box like a mouth, however there is another meaning behind it. This artist shows how his femininity with the colours pink to define society misogyny towards colours. By painting the inside of the box pink, they also want to express their femininity side. By adding pearls and necklaces, it also add a nice touch into how shiny and white represent how he would like to see himself as.

Freedom

Mixed media – Sculpting wire, wood, glue, plastic, paint

12 x 12 x 12cm

This artwork explores the freedom that i endure when riding my bike. The feeling of control and risk is the best feeling in the world and when you sit on that seat and start up the bike you can feel that freedom as well as that adrenaline starting to course through your veins. The wire around the edges represents a fence and as seen on two sides it shows the wire down. This was to represent that when you are on your bike there is nothing that stands in your way when you are riding. The person sitting down represents someone that lives for the adventure and is always chasing freedom and the key to that is right infront of the is the means of the motorbike.

12×12×12

This artwork explores the idea of me at home in my happy place pig chasing on my motorbike. The is shown by a moto bike parked next to a dude holding a pig with a log and dirt to make a setting. This represents me in my element at home as you can see on the pig is lifted by its back legs just like It would be at home when I catch them. The sticks around my frame symbolized the bush theme as if I was out in the paddock among the scrub and the rope gives it a good rustic look and really suits the environment.

Judging with music

Mixed media – wooden base, plastic, mirrors, red velvet, hot glue, staples, broken music disc, paint.

12 x 12 x 12cm

My artwork represents how music cannot justify how a person acts. Just like judging a book by its cover. It portrays the ways that looking differently at music can change the outcome on your thoughts of a person, this is presented by the mirrors. The mirrors shows how different people have different impressions on people regarding their music, and that if you take a closer look, you can find out who the individual is, this is represented by the full round disc as shown in the photo, the mirrors reflect a completely round disc rather then a quarter of a disc indicating who I am from the inside. The music aspect of this artwork is shown by the broken disc player in the center of this artwork making it the center point of this art piece. This links to myself because the music I listen to does not relate to how I live my life and what type of person I am.

Riverside

Mixed media –wooden base and top, dead grass, twigs, cotton wool, hot glue, paint, army man figure, fabric, wire

12 x 12 x 12cm

This artwork explores and relates to my hobbies and thing I enjoy doing in my free time. The idea was me (the army man figure) camping in a hut by the river fishing. This could be a mirror image of me at home in real life. I used blue cotton to represent water, dead grass to represent the riverside as at home most of the time the riverside is really covered in dead grass to the waters edge. The colors and objects truly relate to the environment and the things I do at home. The artwork was created with a wooden bas with blue cotton and dead grass as a base secondly three sticks were glued upright to the base with a piece of cotton sheet on top making out as a tent as if I am camping. The there was another twig glued to the base with dead grass stuck to the top of the stick creating a tree. Finally, there was a wire frame built as seen in the slide above to hold up the 12 by 12 by 12cm wooden ply as the top with cotton wool painted grey to make out as clouds.

Clay Hindmarch

Riverside

Mixed media –wooden base and top, mirror, hot glue, paint, nails, wire

12 x 12 x 12cm

I resolved the idea by making a U shape out of wood and a mirror that equalled 12x12x12 perfectly and gave me the best format possible too express my artwork how I would like it to be shown It gave me the mirror so that the character could reflect upon himself and gave me a hard wooden base to put nails around him as jail bars. And to give it a really depressed feeling, I painted the whole Project in the charcoal grey colour to symbolise the depression state.

Jamie Beresford

River

Mixed media –wooden base, cardboard, hot glue, paint, woolo, coconut fibre

12 x 12 x 12cm

My final art piece is inspired by the mentor artist Trung Buiviet, aswell as the quote “the grass is greener on the other side.” This idea came to mind because of how our home station went into drought just as my father took over when my grandfather passed away. Since then, we have been in a drought until the last year or so. Just in the last year or so we as a family has started to properly recover from my grandfather's death. I see now as the green side of the river.

Taj Krasna

Trapped in my own thoughts

Mixed media- Plastic army soldiers, a little golden string, grey wooden base, hot glue, mesh, wire.

12 x 12 x 12cm

My artwork explores the idea of me being imprisoned in my own thoughts. This is represented by crafting a 12x12x12 cm prison replica which has me (the wire character) climbing over the prison wall with guards aiming their gun at me not letting me leave.

A lot of people in the world get trapped in their own thoughts sometimes especially this generation we’re in nowadays. The purpose of the artwork is show audiences to know that they’re not the only one who gets caught in their own thoughts.

Mac Ramsay

Trapped in my own thoughts

Mixed media- wooden base, hot glue, mesh, wire, twigs, coconut fibre, plant, balsa wood.

12 x 12 x 12 cm

If you took just one look at this you would see just a man fishing in a river, though, for me it is much more than that. If you dive into the meaning the piece of work represents freedom through nature and the escape from the real world. I decided to do this style of art as it is what is passionate to me and is what I really love to do. This is a my go to way to just relax and forget about life for a bit. This artwork is a mix of natural and artificial items which comes together to form a stream with a man fishing. I didn’t have many problems making this piece but if I was to do this art work again I would make it with more realistic items in my area to give it that more natural look. I would also paint the river a different colour as it is not the same as the water colour at home. And the last thing I would change is just having plane blue in the back ground, I would add mountains as the surround us at home.

Lachlan Roche

Space Dreams

Mixed Media – Carboard Base, Paint Concentrate, Glue, Paper, Printer, Photoshop

12 x 12 x 12 cm

This artwork explores the idea of driving towards your dreams. This is represented with the rope that grasps to the bottom of  the lid, which contains many of my main interests to portray me trying to climb to the top.

The inside contains a table and a chair, its very simple to show, where I can start from and where I spend my time and enjoy the simple things in life rather than things that are extremely extravagant.

The planet on the top symbolizes reaching the top, and it is angelic as it is working on the dream type symbol.

Will Slack-Smith

Frostbite

Mixed media –wooden base, Hot glue, Leaves from a tree, small sticks, paint, wood for house and ladder, Natural Brush (The dead grass on ground)

12 x 12 x 12 cm

This artwork displays my vision of a house In the peaceful wilderness on the cusp of a cold winter’s day. This is represented by a house in the snow surrounded by natural flora.

I have purposely used natural pale colors to represent the peacefulness and serenity, that I often think about to avoid the hustle and bustle in the modern world. Blue sky represents calming open space and a natural freedom to enjoy the peaceful wilderness. White symbolises a season were I feel isolated away from tension and negativity and this is when I'm at my most creative.

Tom Williamson

Life's point of view

Mixed Media – Wooden base, wooden sides, pva glue, paint, paddle pop sticks and toy soldiers.

12 x 12 x 12 cm

This art works explore life's point of view. This is represented by using different colours on the walls to represent those different aspects in my life. The colour symbol that is used is Black - school, Blue friends, Yellow – family, Green – Mates and Pink – dreams. These colour represent a personal analyse on how my life reflects on each of the colours. It is represented that the colours that are darker or brighter each have a meaning on my life's scale. For example, yellow is showed as a bright colour meaning that family is a close thing to me in life. The purpose of the artwork is to show the audience what I consider as my points of view in life.

Xavier Georgiou

Untitled

Mixed Media – Wood, wire, wire mesh, modelling clay, painy, marker pens

12 x 12 x 12 cm

The statement I was making with this piece was to show that as rough as the outside of someone may appear, their inner peace is still there.

Stephen Eardley

Deepening sense of self

Mixed Media – Bamboo base, cardboard, pva glue, paint, gold leaf, printed photoshoped images, copper wire.

12 x 12 x 12 cm

This artwork explores the deepening facets that your journey takes us on when we enter into the inner pilgrimage of the self. Each interior petal of the symbolic lotus flower indicates a colour scheme moving from connection to the the material physical world to the subtle spiitual realm and deeper understanding of the metaphysical self. The central icon, the OM symbol represents the ideal - I AM 'a peaceful soul' travelling in this body.

The exterior petals show the base template of an externalised self - the black and white outline representing the mundane and face we present to the world.

The wooden base symbolizes a strong personal foundation.
